Centrl iPhone Application Makes It Easy to Save and Share Locations

Version 1.40 of Centrl’s iPhone application introduces a new feature that makes it easy for users to save and share locations. Just click location from the menu bar at the bottom, verify your current location by entering in address or selecting one of the detected near-by locations, enter an optional note, click share, select the users with whom you want to share, and your friends will receive a notification containing the location’s information.

This new functionality makes Centrl a great way to tell your friends about all the cool new places you’ve found.

Centrl Adds New Shopping and Services Layers

Centrl just added new shopping and services layers. These new layers will make it easier for Centrl users to find exactly what they are looking for by simultaneously searching multiple datasources and returning only the most relevant results.

Centrl’s Location-Based Advertising System

With the release of its new Location-Based Advertising System, Centrl now lets any business advertise special offers and deals to near-by customers on the Centrl network for free. “We want businesses to advertise money-saving deals on Centrl because we want to help our users save money,” commented Centrl founder and CEO, Murat Aktihanoglu.

The new advertising system includes two levels. The first lets any business advertise for free on the Centrl network. The deals and special offers of businesses participating at this level will be displayed as deal markers in Centrl’s mobile and web applications. A second premium level will allow businesses to differentiate their markers and gain access to ROI analytics and other valuable information.

Unype is now Centrl with a brand new iPhone app and website

As we get more and more users, we have changed our name from Unype to Centrl to reflect the wider userbase we are going after.

After receiving funding late last year, we have been working very hard around the clock and in March we have released our iPhone app along with our completely redesigned website and a brand new scalable backend running on Amazon EC2.

Today a new version of our iPhone app with virtual gifts and extra useful layers (like Yelp and Wikipedia for starters) became available on the App Store: http://itunes.com/app/centrl

We are very excited about our iPhone app and thanks to the easy feedback system that my co-founder Eric Redlinger has put in place in our iPhone app, we are getting great, live, very useful feedback from all of our users. So we hightly recommend to make it very easy for your users to give you feedback inside your application, not just as a ‘email us your thoughts’ line.

Our Android and Blackberry apps are also coming out in the coming weeks and we are looking forward to seeing you in Centrl where you can easily connect with your friends, share and discover places and events, get a lot of useful data on our layers and get special money-saving offers from our partners.

Eric Redlinger joins Unype and Unype on the iPhone

We are extremely excited to have my friend Eric Redlinger join Unype, bringing along his deep research and development expertise on mobile devices, especially the iPhone.

We are also excited to present Eric’s immediate contribution: initial screenshots of an early version of Unype on the iPhone:

Eric’s previous projects include work on the popular multiuser media-synthesis platform KeyWorx project and several innovative iPhone applications: DropCopy, a wireless file transfer utility that has already been downloaded over 300,000 times in just 4 months and the shape-shifting MrMr, an amazing iPhone app that can morph its GUI on the fly according to instructions sent from a server.

We are excited to innovate on the iPhone to bring new kinds of user-focused experiences to the device.

‘Brick walls are there for a reason’ from brilliant Randy Pausch

The man who gave us Alice, Randy Pausch, the professor at Carnegie Mellon University who also inspired countless students in the classroom and others worldwide through his highly acclaimed last lecture, has died of complications from pancreatic cancer. He was 47.

A must-watch video for anyone, but especially for entrepreneurs (and yes, he was a professor):

* Brick walls are there for a reason: they let us prove how badly we want things and they let us prove our dedication.
* Help others.
* A brilliant quote from his mentor he received as a young man: “It’s such a shame that people perceive you as arrogant, it’s going to limit what you are going to be able to accomplish.”
* You can’t get there alone: always tell the truth, be earnest, apologize when you make mistakes and focus on others.
* Get a feedback loop and listen. When you stop getting feedback, it’s really bad. It means people have given up on you.
* Don’t complain, just work hard.
